With Anil Chauhan nearing the end of his tenure, one question keeps coming up — who’s next?

Honestly, if you look at the current situation, one name fits almost perfectly:

From the Indian Air Force

Not just because of seniority, but timing, balance, and optics — everything aligns.
Also, we’ve already had two CDS from the Army, so giving the Air Force a chance would make complete sense from a tri-services perspective.

The government has already shown that it’s open to picking a retired officer too — just like they did with Anil Chauhan.

Strong experience, recent tenure, and fits right into the eligibility window.

As for the Indian Navy — chances look a bit low this time, mainly because of timing.

At the end of the day, there’s no fixed rule. It all comes down to what the government prioritizes — balance or continuity.

A. P. Singh looks like the most natural choice right now.
But with defence decisions, surprises are always on the table.
